Student Council Election Process
At St. Bernard School, we believe leadership positions should be earned through dedication, effort, character, and overall performance throughout the election process. For this reason, this year’s Student Council elections will not be based solely on a popularity vote. Instead, candidates will be evaluated using a comprehensive Student Leadership Performance Rubric that identifies students who demonstrate strong leadership across multiple areas.
Candidates will be evaluated based on the following:
The campaign season has officially begun in May, and candidate speeches will take place on Friday, May 15, during the school day. Students will also cast their votes on the same day. Election results will be announced the following week.
During the voting process, students will be asked to select 8 candidates from the total group of 12 students running for Student Council positions. Once voting has concluded, the Student Leadership Performance Rubric will be used to calculate overall scores and determine final leadership placements.
This process is designed to ensure that Student Council leaders are selected not only for popularity but also for their preparation, communication skills, creativity, leadership potential, and commitment to serving the school community. Our goal is to build a high-performing Student Council team that will positively support school activities, student engagement, and the planning of events throughout the year.
Students who are not selected for their first-choice executive position may still be offered an opportunity to serve on one of the Student Council commissioner teams. These positions are an important part of Student Council and provide students with additional opportunities to grow as leaders and contribute to the school community. Students may choose to accept or decline this opportunity.
Candidates will be evaluated based on the following:
- Quality and effort shown in the application and essay
- Leadership ideas and articulation during the interview process
- Creativity and effort displayed in campaign posters
- Ability to engage and connect with the student body during speeches
- Student and teacher voting input
